Jacob Zuma backs Zimbabwe mediation efforts

APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) South Africa’s ruling African National Congress party president Jacob Zuma on Tuesday urged Zimbabwe’s political leaders to break the stalemate on a unity government, saying mediation could still solve the crisis in that country.

Despite growing international calls for President Robert Mugabe to step down, Zuma said he still supported the mediation effort led by former president Thabo Mbeki. Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai signed a unity accord on September 15, but the deal has yet to bear fruits of a unity government as envisioned by the Mbeki-led mediation.
